ANSWERED PLAINLY

Core Web Vitals: Google's speed score, explained.

Google grades every page's loading experience with three numbers: what each one measures and the passing thresholds TechSetup builds toward for clients across India.

01

THE THREE METRICS

The three metrics: loading, interaction, stability.

Largest Contentful Paint measures when the main content appears (under 2.5 seconds). Interaction to Next Paint covers responsiveness (under 200 milliseconds). Cumulative Layout Shift measures visual stability (under 0.1).

  • LCP under 2.5s: the page feels fast
  • INP under 200ms: taps feel instant
  • CLS under 0.1: nothing jumps under your thumb

02

HOW TO PASS

Images, scripts and fonts, in that order.

Most failures come from the same three sources: uncompressed hero images, third-party scripts competing for the main thread, and web fonts that block text. Fix in that order for the biggest gains first.

  • Compress and resize hero images first
  • Defer non-critical scripts
  • Subset fonts and avoid render-blocking
  • Measure on real phones, not just desktops

CLEAR ANSWERS

Common questions, answered directly.

Do Core Web Vitals decide rankings?

They are a tiebreaker, not the contest. Great content on a slow page still beats thin content on a fast one. But when content is equal, the faster page wins.

Why does my site pass on desktop but fail on mobile?

Phones have slower CPUs, slower networks and smaller viewports. Google grades the mobile experience, so always test with a mid-range phone profile, not your office fibre.

Can a slow site be fixed without rebuilding?

Often, yes. Image pipelines, script deferral and font fixes rescue many sites. A rebuild is only needed when the underlying platform fights every optimisation.
